Let Your Faith Lead

Bradon: Jon, would you describe yourself as a leader or a follower?
Jon: Hmm, good question, I guess there is a time for both, but probably I lead more often.
Bradon: Interesting, Today we will learn how we can let our faith lead us and others!

Discussion Episode
1 Samuel 16

About the Story

Bradon: Okay – Let me explain some of this chapter to you. It was really hard to pick one specific thing to take away. This Chapter is split pretty evenly into two sections – Almost like two different conversations or scenes.

Jon: This can often happen in the Bible – We have said it before, what we take from a section of scripture doesn’t mean that is the ONLY lesson in that section.

Bradon: Right! And the Bible is often broken up into sections to help us understand it. Anyway, all that to say is this one feels a little disjointed while reading through it, almost like two mini-stories!

Jon: I agree, it might be an important time to mention that the numbers or sections we see in our Bibles were put there long after the original writing. They serve only the purpose of helping us study the bible and making it easier to navigate. The sections do not add to any of the context or flow of the story as a whole!

Bradon: now would be a great time to mention that! So thanks!

Application

Bradon: And that is it – so really we learn a decent amount about David in this chapter. He is the youngest of seven brothers and he has favor with the Lord in being the king to replace Saul.

Jon: Right – I get how it feels like two different stories, one involving Samuel and the other Saul.

Bradon: But both involve a young David.

Jon: Exactly – Okay so what do you suppose the lesson within these two stories may be?

Bradon: Well I would consider David somewhat of the main character in this small section. And with that, I think he helps us with the lesson.

Jon: I would agree.

Bradon: I think we see the Lord give favor to David due to his faith. And in fact, we see that David’s faith leads him.

Jon: Right. David was not the one looking to be King, he was in the fields doing his job. And he wasn’t the one who pursued a job with King Saul.

Bradon: Exactly. That was all done through the provision and guidance of God.

Jon: So, to boil all that down. The lesson would then be Let Your Faith Lead.

Bradon: Sometimes we can be so quick to try and lead our own path. We can rush a process or put ideas into our heads just to make sense of things.

Jon: But if we let our faith lead – we will end up exactly where we can receive great invitations from God – Just as we see David do here.
