There is a God

Jon: Bradon, it was just April fools day. What is the best/worst April fools joke you have ever done?
Bradon: Oh do I have some stories for you! It was a joke played on me and some of my friends by a boss we all used to share!
Jon: Today we will learn to announce to the world with our challenges that there is a God!

Discussion Episode
1 Samuel 17

About the Story

Bradon: Last week we saw how this unknown kid named David was summoned by Saul to play the harp or lyre and ease Saul’s troubled mind and heart. King Saul really liked David and asked that he stay in his service. We learned to let our faith lead.

Jon: Thinking of One lesson that I had to learn was that too many practical jokes will make it really difficult for others to trust me. So I have learned that there is a time and place for jokes and tricks.

Bradon: Have you learned that? I mean I have been on the wrong end of your tricks a lot. I am still not sure if my shoes are in the right place at the entrance downstairs.

Jon: Fair, I continue to learn this lesson. But just imagine me in my teenage years through my early 40s.

Bradon: K you are still in your 40s which tells me this is a relatively new lesson and what does this have to do with the story.

Jon: Oh, well David wanted to gain Saul’s trust. I don’t think Saul was the guy to pull an April fool joke on.

Bradon:  You are right about that. Not sure what that has to do with our story. So Imagine these two large armies the Philistines vs the Israelites lining up every morning in anticipation of their champions to fight. They faced each other on opposite sides of a valley.

Application

Jon: I think the lesson today is really straightforward. Listen to David’s words to Goliath and to all the soldiers listening. “the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.”

Bradon: Goliath and the Philistines were not just challenging Israel but they were defying that Israel’s God even existed let alone would rescue them. Yet David, even though he was probably pretty scared stood up to Goliath. He believed that God would help him and that as a result, the whole world would come to know that there is a God in Israel.”

Jon: Our lesson is this. As you face challenges align yourself with God. God will help you and as he does the people all around you will see that there is a God and you follow him.

Bradon: There is a God. What an important lesson for our world to learn today!
