Jesus Proves He is God
Bradon: Hey Jon, could you imagine doing something really nice to someone and then having to defend yourself.
Jon: No, I mean that would be ridiculous.
Bradon: That is exactly what happens to Jesus. Jesus, the son of God, has to defend his actions and identity in the coming episode of the Bible Story Podcast. Jesus Proves He is God
Discussion Episode
John 5
About the Story
Bradon: Today, we are going to learn that Jesus proves he is God! Our story is a continuation of last week’s. If you missed last week, it would be good to go back and listen to it before you listen to this story.
Jon: As a quick reminder. There is a pool that has healing properties. There was a man there who needed healing but struggled to get into the pool on his own in order to be healed.
Bradon: Along came Jesus, and he told the man to stand up and pick up his mat. Jesus miraculously healed the man.
Jon: If that wasn’t crazy enough, the Jewish leaders were upset that the man was carrying his mat on the Sabbath – a day of rest!
Application
Bradon: There is a lot to unpack here. Jesus said a lot and made some huge claims that only he could. Jesus’ speech infuriated the Jewish leaders, and they worked even harder to find a way to kill him!
Jon: Today, we see that Jesus proves that he is God. Not God the Father but the Son of God, God the Son.
Bradon: This is an important lesson, and we need to understand that God is “God the Father,” God is “God the Son,” and God is the “Holy Spirit.” God is three, and God is one! This is what is known as the trinity.
Jon: Maybe this is why Jesus speaks about himself in the third person so much. To help us understand his relationship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit.
Bradon: That’s a good point.
Jon: In our story, Jesus proves that he is God.
Bradon: He then invites or challenges the Jewish Leaders to think differently to understand better who he actually is. This is key for each of us too.
Jon: We all are learning more about God, and as we do, we are challenged to think and live differently and find life in Jesus!
Bradon: This is hard work. It is not easy to allow your beliefs to be challenged so dramatically. It’s scary, and yet this is exactly what Jesus does to the religious leaders. If we want to grow, we must allow our beliefs and understanding to be challenged to have a more full and more true understanding of God!
The Point
Jon: Jesus proved that he is God. What are you going to do with that?
Bradon: That’s a huge question! I have a small question for you! Before we move on. … I get that Jesus is defending His action and miracle. Specifically using scripture that the Jewish leaders would have known well… but how exactly does this PROVE He is God?
Jon: The proof is in the miracle he performed; who else could do this but God. Jesus backed up by his own words and further by the words of John the Baptist, who he reminds his listeners of. He also references the writings of Moses, which pointed to him. The Jewish leaders could not argue against what Jesus said or the miracle he performed, yet they refused to believe in him.
