Discussion Episode
2 Kings 6:8-22
About the Story
This is an odd story. I almost get the image of one of those old-timey, black and white films, silent, no voice, like Charlie Chaplin, it has this humorous tone! Short and sweet and to the point. – The key takeaway from today’s story is a quick prayer, God, open our eyes!
So in this book, 2 Kings, we are in the time after King David, Israel & King David Specifically were told that a messianic king would come from the line of David, who we know to be Jesus, however, the kings in these chapters were flawed, and we see Israel continue to struggle as a nation under the rule of these kings!
Right! In this chapter specifically, 2 kings 6:8, the nations of Israel and Syria are at war.
Our eyes can be open to the wonder, extravagance, and elaborate nature of God.

Elisha speaks confidently, without fear, and prays for the young man’s eyes beside him to be open, which God does. They see this amazing picture of God’s wonder, strength, and Kingdom. Chariots of Fire!! Come on! It’s so cool.
This story is a bit puzzling because of the wonder within it. It sounds like fantasy or a good action movie. And yet, Elisha seemingly does not react to it. He sees it as normal! And then this battle, that could have ended up in a blood bath ends with food around a table!? It’s just all so odd!
I think I get what you are saying here; let me wrap it into a package with a pretty bow on it for our listeners!
Our eyes can be open to the wonder, extravagance, and elaborate nature of God. We see that here in scripture! But God’s Wonder and awe-inspiring nature don’t solely come through grand moments or chariots of fire. His wonder can also come from unexpected endings, good in the midst of bad, or His response to our prayers. All of these things lead me to be in awe of His wonder, His greatness!
