Ep 216 | Preparing the Way for Jesus: John the Baptist

John’s message is still relevant today: repent and turn from sin and toward God. His example of serving God is something we should aspire to.

Scripture

Matthew 3:1-6

In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” The prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said, “He is a voice shouting in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming! Clear the road for him!’” John’s clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey. People from Jerusalem and from all of Judea and all over the Jordan Valley went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River.

Questions

  1. What does repentance mean?
  2. What was so important about Jesus that John was to prepare the way for him?
  3. How can you be like John, a humble servant of God who prepared people for Jesus?
Prayer Requests

At the end of your discussion, go around the group and ask for prayer requests.

Discussion | Come and See For Yourself

Jon: You are listening to the discussion episode for the story, “Come and see for yourself.”

Bradon: John the Baptist pointed out Jesus as the Messiah. Andrew starts chatting with Jesus then runs to find his brother Simon to bring him to meet Jesus. Jesus then gives Simon the nickname or new name of Peter, which means Rock! Next, Phillip meets Jesus, and then he runs back to find his buddy Nathaniel who is skeptical that anything good comes from Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth. Again Jesus makes a great first impression, and Nathaniel is convinced that Jesus is the Messiah. All four guys become disciples of Jesus because they all went to see for themselves if it was true – if Jesus was the Messiah!

Bradon: A quick recap and then the questions for the episode “He is the Son of God”

Jon: Simply put, today’s story was more of a conversation or even a speech from John the Baptist. We recognize the significance of this moment. The change it brought and the bold statements being made by John. Claiming that Jesus is the Son of God and that He would be the one to baptize with the Holy Spirit.
